SYRIA – WHOSE RESPONSIBILITY?
As Syria descends into anarchy the international community watches paralysed. Up to thirty thousand have already died. There is a threat of wider war in the Middle East, from which neighbouring countries could not escape. Turkish, Russian, Jordanian, Lebanese, Kurdish, Israeli, Saudi, Iranian and Iraqi interests are all engaged, while the UN Security Council cannot act. The destiny of the Arab Spring is at stake and for some the UN itself is on trial. There has been shelling across the Turkish-Syrian border, and tens of thousands have become refugees.
