MCEC hosted an evening to celebrate Eid and charitable giving last week, with chief guests from the Charity Commission, including the Chair William Shawcross, CEO Paula Sussex, Director Michelle Russell and others. Guests from neighbouring mosques, charities and Muslim organisations were also invited to take part.

The evening consisted of a number of speeches enhancing the significance of charitable giving; a number of important issues were raised and views were exchanged about the role, responsibility and purpose of charities and charitable giving.
We heard from representatives from MCEC, including the CEO, Tariq Sediq who spoke about the role and responsibilities of charity in Islam. Representatives from Al-Khair (CEO Shuaib Yusaf) and HANDS International (Trustee Samad Billoo) talked about some of the work that was being undertaken in their respective organisations. William Shawcross talked about activities of the Charity Commission, and we learnt how they govern and oversee charities in England and Wales. Some provocative questions were asked and stimulating debates took place over a dinner which was served by MCEC volunteers. MCEC Chair Talat Shaikh spoke about responsibilities of a charity towards its donors while Yasir Shaikh spoke about ensuring the next generation become and remain engaged with charitable activities. The evening ended with a Vote of Thanks and food for thought delivered by Lord Sheikh.
This was a great opportunity which strengthened ties and enabled us to learn more about the charity work being achieved by various organisations, as well as getting a better understanding of the charity commission and its function.
We would like to thank the guests, speakers, organisers and volunteers who helped make this an enjoyable evening and informative Eid dinner gathering.
